About

Carl has a PhD in Microelectronic Engineering from University College Cork, completed at the Tyndall National Institute, where he developed Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) and Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) sensor technology. He founded Photon Detection Systems in 2002 and then SensL in 2004 to commercialise it. Over the next 14 years he built SensL from a university spinout into the leading global supplier of solid-state photon-counting sensors, with customers across medical imaging, radiation detection, biophotonics, industrial and automotive markets. SensL was acquired by onsemi (Nasdaq: ON) in 2018. Carl stayed on as VP of Engineering before leaving in 2021 to focus on early-stage companies. He currently holds board, chair and advisory roles across a number of deep-tech and medtech companies in Ireland and the UK and has advised on multiple trade sales of deep-tech and semiconductor companies, acting as banker and seller's representative. Carl brings direct experience of taking a university technology through commercialisation, scaling and exit to AutoCircuit's path from research to spin-out.
