Muhammad Sarmad Ali is a postdoctoral researcher in the BDS research group. He completed his PhD (2023) working under SFI-funded research project, Automatic Design of Digital Circuits (ADDC). His research focused on how evolutionary computing techniques, especially Grammatical Evolution, can automate the design and development of software systems. More specifically, he explored how grammar analytics can be utilised in automatically designing and refining the grammar.
In his post-PhD research, Sarmad worked on a project focusing on early-stage breast cancer detection. Currently, he is working on an industry-funded project that aims to enable software performance optimisation by not only applying effective refactorings but also utilizing machine learning for optimal compiler flag selection.
Sarmad has also worked in academia for more than 10 years. Besides his involvement in research, he is also serving as a part-time Assistant Lecturer at Dundalk Institute of Technology where he delivers modules at the Dept. of Computing Science and Mathematics.
